One of the most beautifully situated is Montbrun-les-Bains, on the east side of the bare mountain. A few years ago, I was there and discovered this village situated on a hilltop. Apart from the lovely little streets and Provençal houses, this is the village’s trump card: the panoramic view of the rugged landscape.

Montbrun-les-Bains benefits from a favourable location, it is protected from the mistral by the surrounding mountains and thanks to its fairly high altitude of six hundred metres, it suffers less from heat waves than villages further south. The village is surrounded by fields, forests and lavender fields and has been known as a thermal destination for centuries. The water, rich in sulphur, is among other things relieving for people suffering from rheumatism and arthritis.

History
The history of Montbrun-les-Bains is closely linked to that of other villages in this region. Already in Roman times, the sources were known. Probably, the hill where the present village is situated was already inhabited before that time. It grew into a fortified place, and in the Middle Ages an important castle was built. It was owned by one of the most influential families in the region. The village lost its importance when Charles Dupuy de Montbrun, leader of the Protestants, was executed in Grenoble. A few years before, his castle had been destroyed by order of the King of France. From then on, it was mainly popular for its thermal baths. After the First World War, people had other things on their minds than visiting spas, and the baths fell into disuse. It was not until the 1970s that the baths were revived. Nowadays, the thermal centre once again attracts tourists to the village.

Highlight
The literal highlight of the village is the walk to the castle at the top. You then pass all the nice places of Montbrun, successively the entrance gate, the church and the narrow ancient streets. At almost every point, you have beautiful views of the surroundings, with as cherry on the cake the panorama towards the Mont Ventoux in the west. Of the castle itself, quite a bit has remained standing, considering the fact that it has been in ruined condition for many centuries. However, the grounds are privately owned, so not otherwise accessible.

The church
the beautiful church dates from the 12th century, has been greatly altered, contains a beautiful and impressive altarpiece from the 17th Bern in the middle a painting by Pierre Parrocel depicting a Madonna and Child.

The castle of Dupuy-Montbrun (14th century)
medieval castle demolished in 1560, was rebuilt by Charles Dupuy Montbrun in 1564 in pure Renaissance style. It is flanked by four round towers, three of which are still in good condition. The main door or gate of honour, carved in the rock, shows two semi-circular columns: on the left was carved an eagle, and on the right, a lion. Its imposing ruin overlooking the medieval village testifies to the power of the Lord at that time.

The Belfry (fourteenth century)
The bell tower – or the Belfry – was one of four fortified gates built in the 14th century close to the town. High square tower, ended by a cantilevered platform on three sides, it is crowned by a campanile. Flanked by a magnificent fountain, it now gives access to the highest houses of the village, the church and the castle ruins.

The portal Ste-Marie (fourteenth century)
St Mary’s door – or north portal – is one of the four fortified gates that protected Montbrun. The three other doors are that of the Clastre (under the archway of the church), that of the Belfry (Bell Tower Square), and the castle. These items sometimes with harrows reflect the defensive character of the old village.

The route of the fountains available from the Tourist Office, 16 fountains of the trail will see you discover the village along a path fountain.
Possibility of medicalised cures (respiratory, rhumathology) and fitness.
Fitness room with spa pool, panoramic jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, massage, fitness and aerobics

Around the Mont Ventoux, there are many nice villages.
